Video: AT&T launching Mobile TV May 4th, demonstrated on LG Vu

Filed under:

MediaFLO is about to cut loose for AT&T customers and we've got video to prove it. After the break you'll find Mobile TV running on LG's new $300 (2-year, after $100 rebate) Vu, one of just two Mobile TV compatible handsets launching on AT&T May 4th -- the other being the $200 (2-year, after $100 rebate) Samsung Access. Performance looks reasonably snappy when scrolling through the channel guide although some of the exclusive PIX and CNN Mobile Live content is not yet available. S'ok, AT&T has three more days to throw the big blue switch on the broadcast TV service which includes a $15/month unlimited Mobile TV access plan. Hear that Verizon? AT&T's about to step all over your portable TV game in the US market.

Publicity and Apple

Section: Apple, Originals

Apple Store
Let’s face it, Apple gets a TON of publicity.  So much so that some sites has made feeds that exclude all articles dealing with Apple.  This article will discuss two things dealing with all this publicity, why it happens and what it does for Apple.

Why does this happen? Apple makes their hardware and software themselves for the most part.  This means every time one of these products gets updated, there is news about it.  With so many products, many updates are bound to happen, which means more publicity.  Also, Apple knows how to market a product efficiently and increase the publicity even more.  They make the announcements of the devices they create huge and develop tons of hype.  All this hype around the device causes it to be heard about all over the internet, news shows, etc which is bound to lead to good things.  But, what are those goods things?  Read on to find out.

What does it do for Apple? Publicity brings customers and customers bring money.  And behind every sale there is, obviously, money.  With so much hype around all of their products, even people not in the tech field are bound to hear about them.  Heck, even my local news station was reporting about the iPhone.  All these potential customers seeing these great products causes them to look more into and, in some cases, even buy it.  Apple has mastered this and is why their market share continues to increase.  People hear so much about their products that they begin to get curious, just what Apple needs to drive a sale.

What are you thoughts?  Is this publicity good for Apple, or just annoying?

AT&T to cut iPhone price by $200, according to report

Section: Apple News, Rumors, iPhone + Communications, iPhone

AT&T Logo

According to a report by Fortune today, AT&T Inc. will subsidize $200 of the purchase price for new iPhones purchased this summer, reducing its cost to as low as $199. Although Apple wouldn’t be particularly happy, they wouldn’t be able to object either, due to increasing iPhone sales through AT&T.

Fortune claimed in its report that AT&T will subsidize the price of new iPhones capable of accessing the 3G data network that the carrier is currently expanding in the United States. AT&T’s $200 price cut would likely be limited to customers who sign a two-year contract, and would not be available directly through Apple. Apple and AT&T now sell the iPhone for $399 for the 8 GB model and $499 for the 16 GB model, and the expected 3G models are estimated to have the same list prices. Several weeks before the new 3G iPhone is to be released, Apple will stop supplying the current iPhone models to reduce inventory, according to Fortune.

Both Apple and AT&T declined to comment on the report, with representatives from both companies stating that they do not comment on speculation.

Demand for Intel’s Atom already outstripping supply?

There's a ton of upcoming laptops and devices based around Intel's Atom processor, and it looks like all the early interest is causing that best of all possible problems for the chipmaker: it's gotten too many orders. Intel told the WSJ that it's planning on producing "millions" of Atom chips this year, but that it's "seeing better-than-expected demand" as production begins and that it's "we are working quickly to address it." Still, it looks like manufacturers are expecting a shortage to last for a while -- ASUS predicted that supply would be constrained until the third quarter during its quarterly conference call, for example -- and various Chinese trade publications have reported the same. That's definitely not encouraging news, and with AMD's Puma and VIA's Isaiah nipping at Atom's heels, Intel might want to kick things into a higher gear.

Gigabyte’s GSmart Smart Touch UI shown on video

Filed under:

Check it -- Gigabyte has just revealed details about a swank new user interface for its GSmart mobiles, and it has been coined Smart Touch. Sadly, multi-touch gestures aren't supported, but it does handle dragging / dropping and gives users oodles of customization options. Comically enough, the note on the new UI actually admits that it "works like [the interface on the] iPhone," but it claims to be superior due to its tight-knit integration and more "useful and interesting features." Sure, alrighty. We'll let you be the judge on this one -- jump on past the break for an excruciatingly long demonstration vid.

Get the iPhone commercial ringtone

iPhone commercial ringtoneOne of my annoyances with the has been that the ringtone that uses in all the commercials is not available on the phone. Small issue, I know - but if you are showing off a phone that has a certain ring, isn’t it natural to expect that if you buy that phone, that it would have the ability to ring the same way?

Well apparently, if you own a Mac and have iLife 08 installed, you already have the ringtone available on your system. All you need to do is fire up GarageBand to turn it into a ringtone for your iPhone. You can find the file in the following directory:

/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects/Work - Home/

The file is called “Cell Phone Ringing”. Go ahead and give it a try. For those of you who don’t have iLife, or are running Windows, you can download the iPhone TV Commercial ringtone. Fantastic. However, I don’t think this will be replacing “Music is My Hot, Hot Sex” as my default anytime soon...but it’s the principle.

EDIT: Okay, after listening to the file again, it doesn’t sound exactly like the ring from the commercial, but it’s very, very close.

First ever BlackBerry clamshell phone unmasked, dubbed the ‘Kickstart’

Filed under:

Ready to have your brain blown out through the top of your head? Look above -- you're staring at the heretofore unseen BlackBerry clamshell, the Kickstart. The Boy Genius snagged a handful of photos of the device (which apparently he's known about for "a while"), and has decided to share his good fortune with the rest of the world. The phone sports a Pearl-esque keyboard, typical trackball navigation, and apparently utilizes both an internal and external LCD screen. No word on specs, carriers, or a release date, but BGR is saying this puppy is due before the end of the year. You'll know more when we know more!

Go Moto Danica!

Danica Patrick

What do you do when Danica Patrick wins her first IndyCar race? If you are Motorola, you grab a huge pic of her with your insignia on her jumpsuit and offer free wallpaper. Then you build a site called MotoDanica and feature a whole slew of kewl products with her name on them. They include a Bluetooth Automotive System for switching from music to phone, a Bluetooth Headset, and MOTOKR Headphones. We think this surely beats being on a box of Wheaties.
