Viva Las iMacs!

What happens in Vegas will be visible to your iChat buddies when the $2.9 billion Fontainebleu resort opens in Sin City next fall.

VegasTrippers.com reports that the Fontainebleu has partnered with Apple to install an iMac in every one of the 3,889 rooms and suites. To quote the fancy brochure available on the Fontainebleu website:

"Fontainebleau guests experience a new sensory landscape through an innovative relationship with Apple. The program includes intuitive and simple options for booking and pre-planning stays online and interactive programming throughout the resort. An iMac in every guest room inspires guests to share memories and encourages personal expression."

There's no word on whether a fabulous Vegas version of iPhoto will give you the ability to airbrush out that strange woman or man you're with, or if there is a new Apple-designed peripheral for removing tattoos that mysteriously showed up on your body overnight.

Computer designed to read thoughts from brain scans

Filed under:

Frighteningly enough, this isn't the first (or second) time that we've seen scientists pat themselves on the back for creating a mind-reading machine, but a dedicated team from Carnegie Mellon has just announced a computer that "has been trained to read people's minds by looking at scans of their brains as they thought about specific words." In a completely unsurprising move, gurus familiar with the development are suggesting that the breakthrough could be used to better understand how the brain organizes knowledge, and eventually, treat language disorders and learning disabilities more effectively. That's all gravy from here, but when this stuff starts passing as evidence in court, you'll know it's time to seriously investigate a relocation to Mars.

StyleTap officially bringing Palm emulator to the iPhone / iPod touch

Filed under: , , Way back in February we posted on an experimental Palm emulator for the iPhone & iPod touch from StyleTap. At the time, they insisted that they were making no commitment whatsoever to release it as a product. Well, apparently they've gotten over their cold feet as StyleTap has announced their intention to bring StyleTap CrossPlatform to the iPhone and iPod touch. It will be available in "early July 2008" and more details will be released at that time. I wonder if they delayed a bit too long. Obviously, they were waiting for iPhone 2.0, but with native software coming at the same time I wonder how much Palm software people will want. That said, there is a huge catalog of Palm software out there and having come from a Treo I can think of several applications (especially finance related) that I would love to have on my iPhone. What do you think; is there any Palm software out there you really want running on your iPhone? [via iPhone Alley] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Giant bunny formed from GPS path

Filed under:

First things first: considering the huge amount of press garnered by a recent position art scam, this here could indeed be just another spoof to get your hopes up. That being said, we're pretty sure no one with any level of decency would do such a vile thing on Easter Sunday, which is precisely when the above bunny was purportedly created from waltzing about with a Magellan GPS and a digital camera. The artist himself admits that what you see above is a slightly cleaned-up version of the actual path, but we're told that any edits that occurred had no huge bearing on the outcome of the piece. You be the judge.

Prototype iControlPad proves itself on video

Filed under:

Hah, did you really have the nerve to doubt CraigIX? The iPhone gamepad add-on that we heard about just last week is already inching closer to reality, and there's a video to prove it. In the somewhat unexciting clip posted up after the jump, you'll see a PCB mockup of the device doing its thang, though it's quite inelegant in its current form. If you just needed one more something to boost your interest / confidence that this critter was real, you know where to head.

I’ve always wanted pong on my iPhone!

Section: Apple, Software + Apps, Games, Third-Party, iPhone + Communications, iPhone, iPhone SDK & Apps iPong Game ScreenshotThe iPhone is a great gaming device as it is now. However, add multiplayer support to some games and you have yourself one killer network! What makes me say this? iPong of course! A developer named Kondo over at a Japanese company has created a multiplayer pong game for the iPhone. There is a video of the game out there and it works by entering another player’s screen after they hit it with their pong paddle. It sounds like the men in the video are having a great time, and I would love to try this out! This game was made in just a couple hours and really shows how good of a handheld gaming system the iPhone can be. When the SDK is realeased, developers will have a great platform to develop on, and I know they will take advantage of it. This game is just the beginning of what is going to become of the iPhone, but I’m impressed already. Welcome to the real social, hey Microsoft? MSI Wind gets terse pre-release review

Filed under:

It's pretty tough to wrap your melon around, but MSI's Wind has not yet officially launched per se. That being said, it has still managed to end up in the hands of quite a few eager subnote lovers, and Laptop Mag is no exception. Shortly after the UK branch of CNET posted up their initial impressions, along comes yet another mini-review to get you even more worked up about June 3rd. Here's the skinny so far: the screen is amazing, keyboard is as well, the trackpad is simply too cramped and the port assortment is very respectable. All in all, critics were left "seriously impressed," and they even threw together a video and image gallery for checking out afterwards. Head on over, alright?

Snoop Dogg wants to give you a MacBook Air

Filed under:

Looks like Snoop Dogg wants you to have some Apple goodness. Crestock is hosting a wallpaper design competition with the Dre protégé where the prizes over four rounds are, respectively: an iPod classic 80GB, an iPod touch 16GB, an iPod touch 32GB and a MacBook Air. The top three entries in each round also get placement on snoopdogg.com (and his mySpace page... in case anyone with enough taste to hire you actually goes to mySpace) and a load of Snoop Dogg merchandise with a street value of $500+.

With or without the d-o-double-g action, it's a chance for the design-inclined to get some work out there and score an iPod or an Air. Of course, it's essentially on spec, which might get you some flak, but you're not competing for a job. You're competing for internet glory and a MacBook Air, so it's really just good clean fun(izzle).

Visit the contest homepage for more information. The contest is running now, so if you're interested you should scoot.

Christmas to Come Early

Section: Apple, Apple News, Rumors, Steve Jobs, Updates, Conferences, WWDC, Software + Apps, .Mac, iPhone + Communications, iPhone, iPhone SDK & Apps, Mac + Computers, Laptops, MacBook, Operating Systems, Leopard, Originals

wwdc08

With all the WDDC rumors flying around Worldwide Developers Conference 2008, it has become tough to keep track of them all.  Here is a list of recent rumors, and details on their credibility.

1.  3G iPhone - Is the Pope Catholic?  I think that it is safe to say that this is the only rumor that is definitely going to become a reality.  Now the only question is what it will look like and what any changes to the OS will be.  Personally, I would love the iPhone to look something like this.  Two of the biggest proofs behind this rumor are a lack of iPhones ("Currently unavailable") on the Apple website and the fact that AT&T are not allowing their employees to take vacations for a period of time this summer, supposedly around the 3G iPhone launch.  Also pointing to 3G are supposedly leaked screenshots of the 3G iPhone, strange new terms on shipping manifests, dates supposedly being announced, strange looking icons buried deep within the iPhone SDK, and announcements coming straight from the horse’s mouth, or in this case, the mouth of the Telefónica Europe’s CEO.

2.  .Mac take two - No one is positive, but I think that this one is fairly likely.  Opal Tribble reports on the subject.  Oh, and Steve? If you are reading this, just know that changing the name to Mobile Me will beat the great service that .Mac provides around the head, and then proceed with a sharp kick to the groin for good measure.  In other words, I really really really don’t like the sound of that name.

3.  Tablet Mac - about a 60-75% chance of truth.  A tablet Mac would be nice, and it would really put an emphasis on portability.  MacRumors reports the following:

As part of an Intel event for the 40th birthday of the semiconductor company at Munich’s BMW World, Germany managing director Hannes Schwaderer confirmed today what has long been a rumor on the Internet: namely, that there is an iPhone with Intel’s new Atom chip. The device is slightly larger than the current version, Schwaderer said. That is not, however, because of the Intel chip, but because of the larger display used in the new iPhone.

A Tablet Mac would be awesome, and Apple has been known to surprise, but I think that rumors surrounding a large iPhone type device should be taken with a grain of salt.

4. MacBook Redesign - the chances of this are only slightly better then those of George Bush being reelected.  More possible, I think, would simply be upgrades to the innards of the current MacBook.

5. OS 10.6 demo - Least likely of the group.  Apple has patented the possible names Lynx and Cougar, following the large cats theme, so something should be coming soon.  Personally, I prefer Cougar.  The only possible reasoning behind the demo is it would put the new OS in good position for a MacWorld ‘09 release.

I think that it is definitely safe to say that this year’s WWDC conference will not disappoint.  Sound off in the comments if you have any rumors (with proof, please) of WWDC happenings that were left out in this post.

Creative’s Vado Pocket Video Cam unboxed on video

Filed under:

There's honestly not a lot of mind-blowing material in the video posted up after the jump, but it definitely delivers as advertised. You see, you've got Creative's Flip Video-combating Vado cheapcorder all wrapped up, and over the course of 317 seconds, it manages to slip outside of its shell and get handled. Initial impressions are dished out too (hint: they're surprisingly positive), so don't skip out on hitting the read link while your cursor is down in the general vicinity.
