Tether your iPhone, wirelessly. Maybe.

Filed under:

We're not sure how this one got past Apple's App Store censors, but the clever kids at Nullriver have released what appears to be the first tethering solution for the iPhone. The $10 NetShare app is just a SOCKS proxy that links an ad-hoc WiFi network to the iPhone's 3G or EDGE connection -- and if we could get it to work, we'd probably think it was a fine, if hacky, solution to a major limitation of Steve's baby. As it stands, though, the instructions are pretty sparse, and while we can get the app to recognize a connection, we're not able to actually load anything. We're not sure how long this one's going to last -- anyone else willing to give it a shot before it gets yanked?

Section: Software + Apps, Design, Mac + Computers, Software

QuarkXPress 8Quark has announced that QuarkXPress 8, the next major release of the page-layout and design software, is now available. QuarkXPress 8 features a new interface developed for the creation of high-end page layout, and includes new features such as built-in print, Web and Flash authoring tools, advanced typography control, and global publishing capabilities. QuarkXPress 8 also offers an enhanced design experience so users can work faster and smarter by quickly and easily accessing the tools they need.

New features include:

  • Flash and Web Authoring Tools: Without any programming skills, designers and creative professionals can share print content on the Web and in Flash format without purchasing multiple applications or learning code.
  • Picture Content Tool: Allows users to grab, rotate, and scale images in real-time without typing in numbers or switching from tool to tool.
  • Item Tool and Text Content Tool: Smart behavior within these tools allows for less switching between tools, even for rotation and managing multiple items.
  • New Bézier Pen Tools: Draw illustrations directly in QuarkXPress 8 with the redefined Bézier Pen tool.
  • Workspace Enhancements: Include new buttons for instant access to master pages and exporting to PDF, EPS, SWF, and HTML- plus new split-view buttons, enhanced contextual menus, and customizable active pasteboards.
  • Measurements Palette: Further enhanced to make even more functions easily accessible, including new clickable controls for on-the-fly drop-shadow modification.
  • Drag-and-Drop: Drag text and pictures from the desktop, Adobe Bridge, iPhoto, or any other application that supports drag and drop. Alternatively, drag content from QuarkXPress to Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Word, and other applications for direct editing.

“We are excited to announce the broad availability of QuarkXPress 8. This new version of our flagship product raises the bar once again for page-layout and design,” said Terry Welty, Senior Vice President of corporate marketing for Quark. “QuarkXPress 8 offers users advanced features and functionality and increased productivity while maintaining familiarity for long-time users. Logitech to produce “premium” Guitar Hero: World Tour instruments

If you didn't think every single third-party peripheral provider would try to snag a piece of the band game pie, we guess you thought wrong, huh? With outfits like Mad Catz and Ion already jumping in, it was only a matter of time before Logitech threw on its tightest jeans, blacked out its blond hair and threw up some horns. Details are admittedly scarce, but the company has promised to provide "premium instruments" for Guitar Hero: World Tour on PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii. Rockers can expect the new gear to start shipping "later this year," though prices, designs and pretty much anything else of importance remains a mystery.

Scott McNulty, signing off

Filed under:

I'm not used to writing about myself here on TUAW. I'm usually not the story, but just this once we thought it would be appropriate to break with tradition.

After 3.5 years here at TUAW (here's my first post), and serving as lead blogger for a good portion of that time, I will be moving on to other things (perhaps bigger, if I'm lucky, but it is hard to think that they will be better. If they are just as good I'll count myself as a lucky fellow indeed).

TUAW's destiny is now in the very capable hands of Dave Caolo and Mike Rose. TUAW will continue to grow by leaps and bounds under their leadership, and it will bring you all the great tips, tricks, and Mac news you have come to expect.

Read on for more of this treacly goodbye post.

NASA says Phoenix lander is sampling water on Mars

Filed under:

Yep, just like we'd heard, the Phoenix lander has identified water in a soil sample it collected in Mars earlier, and NASA's extended the mission for another 90 days to go look for more. There's no analysis of the ice yet, but it doesn't look like there's any organic materials in the sample, and it'll take another three to four weeks before there's any more data to reveal. Hopefully that means we'll be packing up our silver go-go boots and taking off for our fabulous future lives on Mars in a month, but we'll see how things go.

Appletell Giveaway results - Super Monkey Ball

Section: iPhone + Communications, iPhone, iPhone SDK & Apps

Super Monkey BallYou guys have responded, and the results for the Super Monkey Ball giveaway from Appletell are in. We received a lot of nicely worded, well thought out comments, and some, well, not so great comments. I have looked through each and every comment myself and have narrowed it down to one (from about four or five I was debating between).

I would like to congratulate Shubham Kedia on his victory, and the ability to now enjoy the awesome game that is Super Monkey Ball.  His comment showed he really wanted to give the popular game a try and has followed its progress in the App Store. I hope he enjoys it!  Good job, Shubham!

For those of you wondering, here is his comment:

Sega’s demo of Super Monkey Ball at the iPhone SDK Event had created an enormous hype among all iPhone and iPod Touch users around the world. Millions waited anxiously as the day of the AppStore launch neared. As expected, Sega had an extremely profitable launch day and even today, more than a week after it’s release, Super Monkey Ball remains one of the top paid apps in the AppStore.

With jaw-dropping graphics on a mobile device and brilliant use of the iPhone accelerometer, Super Monkey Ball features 110 exciting levels for one to enjoy. An addicting game to keep you busy for hours, Super Monkey Ball is definitely a must-have game for every age group. However, the $9.99 price tag makes it difficult, if not impossible, for a 15 year old student like me to afford such an awesome game. This may be my only chance to ever play this game on my iPhone, so I guess it was worth a shot.

Be sure to check back with Appletell soon, as we have more great giveaways queued up.
